The Mortimer House was built in 1823 by Peter and Jacob Seitzinger as a private dwelling. Colonel George Shoemaker bought the building about 1824 and opened a hotel there, continuing the business until he sold the property to William Mortimer, Jr. It was then sold to the Mountain City Banking Company in 1875, and torn down soon after. The Pennsylvania National Bank is now located at the site on the southwest corner of west Norwegian and Centre Streets. |
