The Gilberton Trolley Riot occurred on July 21, 1893, when the Gilberton Borough Council and the Schuylkill Traction Company had a dispute concerning the location of track within the borough. Councilmen Reynolds and Stone met with the "dinky" crew and told them that the tracks could be only relaid with picks and shovels, not rifles. Then, satisfied that trouble had been averted, they dropped into foley's saloon. Shots rangout, however, and in the melee two men were killed.
