The first tunnel in North America was dug through this hill near Landingville by the Schuylkill Navigation Company. Built between 1818 and 1819, it was 450 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 18 feet from the canal bottom. The canal horses and mules would walk over the hill while the boats poled through the tunnel. By 1837 the tunnel was cut to half it's length, a decade later it was widened and shortened again, and finally, between 1855 and 1860, the roof was removed. |
