This image shows the stripping of the huge Mammoth vein near Shenendoah

This image shows the "stripping" of the huge Mammoth vein near Shenendoah. Notice the gangways that were dug into a vein when it was deep mined. This stripping is on the site of the Shenandoah City Colliery where work was begun in 1862. The buildings on the site -- including forty-seven tenant houses and a large boarding house -- were completed in 1863.
