This image shows the "stripping" of the huge Mammoth vein near Shenendoah. Notice the gangways that were dug into a vein when it was deep mined. This stripping is on the site of the Shenandoah City Colliery where work was begun in 1862. The buildings on the site -- including forty-seven tenant houses and a large boarding house -- were completed in 1863. |
