Valted arches in an anthracite mine. Starting about 1920 steel and concrete structures replaced timber props in many mines as a safety feature. The miner in the foreground is "spragging" a coal car by putting a log into the wheel. As the wheel turns the log will catch the axle and act as a brake to stop the car.
